Desk lamp FAQ

Quick answers about brightness, color, bulbs, and placement.

Brightness

Lumens: what the lamp puts outLux: light landing on the deskcloser = more lux
It depends on distance and task. As a reference, a 60 W incandescent equals about 800 lumens. Choose a lamp that can get bright enough to read print easily, and dim it down when you need less.
Lux measures how much light lands on a surface. Lumens measure what the lamp puts out. The same lamp gives more lux the closer it is.

Color

It is color temperature. Lower is warmer, higher is cooler.
How accurately the light shows colors, up to 100. Aim for 80 or more, 90 or more for color work.

Bulbs

Match the base and stay at or below the lamp's maximum rated wattage.
LED desk lamps are widely used for everyday work. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and avoid looking straight into bright LEDs.

Placement

Opposite your writing hand.
Aim the lamp at the desk, not the screen, and move it until reflections disappear.
