How clamp lamps attach

A clamp screws onto the desk edge. The arm pivots from the clamp, so the lamp uses no desk surface and can reach far over the desk.

How base lamps stay stable

A weighted base keeps the lamp upright. Longer arms need heavier bases to avoid tipping when extended.

Measure your desk edge

Check the desk edge thickness against the maximum clamp opening the maker lists. Also check there is clear space under the edge for the clamp screw.

Glass, thin, and lipped desks

Clamps can damage or slip on glass and very thin tops unless the maker says the clamp suits them. Desks with a lip, drawer, or rounded edge may not give the clamp a flat grip.

Glass tops.

Use a clamp only if the maker says it suits glass.

Thin tops.

Clamps can slip or mark thin desks; a pad helps.

Lips and drawers.

A lip, drawer, or rounded edge may not give the clamp a flat grip.

Reach and desk space

Clamps free up space and usually allow more reach. Bases let you move the lamp anywhere, including to another room.
