Dorm desks: small space, shared room

Dorm desks are often small and shared rooms mean a roommate may be sleeping. A clamp or compact lamp saves space, and dimming lets you study without lighting the whole room.

Dorm.

Clamp or small footprint. Dimmable for a shared room. Check housing rules first.

Kids.

Stable base or secure clamp. Simple controls. Cord out of the way. Look for a safety mark such as UL or ETL.

Check dorm rules before buying

Many colleges publish lists of allowed and banned items, which can include certain lamp types. Check your housing rules first.

Kids' desks: stability and simple controls

Choose a lamp with a heavy, stable base or a secure clamp, and controls a child can use easily. A lamp with a long arm can tip if it is pulled or extended, so place it where it cannot be knocked off the desk. Avoid lamps with small detachable parts for young children, and supervise young children around any lamp.

Cool-running lamps and cord safety

LED lamps usually run cooler than halogen or incandescent bulbs, but any lamp can get warm, so keep it away from bedding, curtains, and papers. Keep cords tidy, out of walkways, and out of reach of young children, and do not run them under rugs. Look for a safety certification mark such as UL or ETL on the lamp or its listing. Follow the maker's instructions and your school or housing rules.

Light for homework and studying

The same basics apply as for any desk: enough light on the page, the lamp opposite the writing hand, and no bright bulb in view. See our task lighting guide.
